GRIEVE

Broadside

Illustrator

18 in. x 24 in.

Grieve, Goddess Sings, For The Black Sons of America by Sakinah Hofler is presented in this broadside as both text and invocation. My intention was to visually amplify the poem’s emotional register—its lamentation, reverence, and quiet resilience—through a design language that mirrors its tonal complexity.

Grief is not singular; it is layered, oscillating between anguish and acceptance. Through deliberate graphic gestures, I reference these shifting states—forms that suggest rupture and strain alongside moments of stillness and composure—allowing the visual elements to echo the poem’s emotional cadence.

The overarching aim of the broadside is to establish a considered harmony between text and image, where neither overpowers the other. Instead, they operate in dialogue, deepening the act of reading and extending the poem’s conceptual and emotional resonance beyond the page.
